- Cost
- Free with ads; paid add-ons in the app
In Canada, it's app only
TextNow works in Canada over Wi-Fi or your mobile data. Don't buy a TextNow SIM card, because its cellular service isn't offered in Canada.
Choosing a number
TextNow asks for an area code and shows about ten numbers to choose from. A specific local area code isn't guaranteed. If none of your local area codes come up, use Fongo Works instead (step 2).
Keep the number
A new number can expire within 24 hours if you don't use it. After that, TextNow has no fixed inactivity limit. It says a call or text at least once a day keeps a free number active. A paid Lock In Number add-on in the app locks it to your account.
Ads and texting
The free plan shows ads in the app, and texting customers is included. Calls away from Wi-Fi use your mobile data.
