Why a separate number

A business number keeps your personal cell private. It goes on your website, invoices and listings, and you can change how it rings without changing the number customers already have.

The two free options in Canada

Fongo Works (recommended) is a free business phone system from a Canadian company. It forwards calls to your cell for free and adds a voicemail and a greeting. Texting needs its paid Pro plan.

TextNow is a free calling and texting app. Calls and texts ring inside the app on your phone over Wi-Fi or mobile data. The free plan shows ads, and you must use the number often or it can be taken back.

Options to skip

Skype is gone. Microsoft retired it in May 2025, and Skype Numbers ended in May 2026. Google Voice is for US users only.

Prices change

Both services are free today, with paid upgrades. Check each provider's current plan page before you choose.
