It depends on your municipality

We found no general Saskatchewan business licence for a small retailer, but cities set their own rules.

In Saskatoon, every business needs a licence. A home-based business licence costs $135, then $95 a year to renew, and the City takes 2–3 weeks to review it. Saskatoon doesn't allow on-site sales of goods from a home business, and it limits visits, including deliveries, to 8 a day. Ask the City whether online sales shipped from home fit its rules before you start.

Look up your own municipality rather than assuming Saskatoon's answer applies to you.

Be upfront about what you sell

Some products or business types carry extra by-laws or requirements, including food. Tell your municipality exactly what you will sell so you know before you start, not after.

Keep the licence

Save it. Banks and suppliers sometimes ask to see it.
