Who has to register

Quebec requires a sole proprietor to register if the business name doesn't include their first and last names. If it does, registering is optional.

Register online

File a declaration of registration online with the Registraire des entreprises. It costs $41. You receive a Quebec enterprise number (NEQ), which other Quebec government bodies use to identify your business. The filing service is mainly in French.

Every year after

From the year after you register, you pay an annual registration fee of $41 (2026) and file a free annual updating declaration, even if nothing changed. A sole proprietor can do both on their Quebec income tax return. Missing two declarations in a row can get your registration cancelled.

Your details are public

The enterprise register is public. If you work from home and do not want customers to see your address, ask the Registraire what is shown and consider a mailing address service.
