Who has to register

New Brunswick requires anyone who trades under a business name other than their own name to register it. If you sell as "Jane Smith", you can skip this step. If you sell as "Jane's Gift Shop", you must register within two months of starting.

Name search first

Before you register, you need a New Brunswick NUANS name search report. Private name search firms sell these, and their prices vary. The report must be no more than 90 days old when the registry receives it.

Register online

File a Certificate of Business Name through the Corporate Registry's online filing centre and attach your NUANS report. The fee is $112, which includes a $12 Royal Gazette publication fee.

Renew every five years

The registration lasts five years. Renewing costs $62. Missing a renewal is an offence and can get your registration cancelled, so put the date in your calendar.

Your address may be public

Business name registrations are a public record. If you work from home and do not want customers to see your address, ask the registry what a search shows before you file, and consider a PO box or a mailing address service.
